I have promised to give you an update of my trip to Brazil. What started as holiday plan ended up as an impacting ministry. I have decided to compress this news so as not to end up writing a book. Here the highlights of my visit.
Well, For a start, get ready to leave your sleep behind when you are packing your suitcase to Brazil, you will not have any need to sleep. Rio is called the city that never sleeps.
I arrived in Rio de Janeiro on the 26th December (actually the day the tsunami disaster occurred).
I stayed in Ywam Rio base for a week to participate in the big New year’s festival, celebrated every year at the popular Copacabana beach. This massive event attracts over 2 million people every year. On the morning of the 31st, we spent the day on the beach doing sports evangelism, giving tracts, puppet and clown ministry and Cappoeira dance. I think the garden of Eden is in Brazil- just like Adam and Eve, the people walk around almost without clothes on.
The main festival started in the evening. Countless number of people flooded to the beach. There was loud music, food, wine, dances, rituals and sacrifices. Different spiritual groups were present. And of course you can hardly turn without seeing some promiscuous activity going on around the place. It was very weird, wild and wacky but typically Brazil.
We ministered in catchy and creative ways like hip hop dance, energetic songs, dance drama, and talent shows. About 83 people gave there lives to God that night.
By midnight, the fireworks started, lasted for 15 minutes. It was a magnificent sight – wild screams filled the air, wine bottles popped all over getting many wet – the energy in that place was very tangible. Then the real party started. We zoomed into high praises and samba dance to God. I think I have not described this event enough.
I traveled to Goiania two days after where I was blessed beyond description with hospitality, warmth and friendship. My friend who offered me the trip flew in and joined me there. We had a free place to stay, every meal was like a banquet.
We preached in four churches, a Rehabilitation center, ministered in an orphanage and did a Radio interview. All these we did in one week.
So many people answered the call to Missions especially in Africa and many received fire in their hearts again. There was an instance where a woman came and held me and just cried. I laid hands and prayed for her. She later wrote me a letter in Portuguese saying she has been called to serve in Africa and that night she made up her mind to go.
After preaching in another church, an elderly woman took off her ring and placed it on my finger and prophesied about the call of God in my life.
We came back to Rio for another one week. I preached in another church the Sunday night before I flew out and it was once again powerful. So many people came and confirmed how God used me to touch their situations. The pastor asked me to prophesy over his congregation and it was amazing how God moved in that meeting.
Even though I did a lot of ministry there, I did not miss out on the food and fun. The pizzerias and churrascarias (where you pay an amount and keep eating till you drop)
Was an unforgettable pleasure. I have also met wonderful people through divine appointment, people of destiny, friends for life.
I flew out on Monday, 17th Jan and stepped on the African soil on the 18th January.
